All the king's horses and all the king's men

Wonder what color that belt is?
With Easter coming up, I thought I'd go with an egg metaphor.  If jiu-jitsu is Humpty Dumpty, I'm still looking for all the pieces.  We'll see about putting it all together again...  Here are my little pieces from the last few weeks:

1.  When breaking guard, immediately pop up the knee that was in the butt.  Before passing, drop that knee over their thigh to lock it down.
2.  When starting from knees, grab low on their pants with your opposite hand, then grab their collar on the same side that you're grabbing their pants, with your same side hand.  Pull or hold the pants, push with the collar hand.  Keep your knee opposite the leg you've grabbed out of the way.
3.  To sweep in spider guard:  If your right foot is in their elbow, put your left foot on their hip.  Get on your left side, kick their right knee/foot out of the way while pushing with your right foot, hopefully ending up in mount.
4.  When fighting for position, lead with your hips, then bring your legs/arms around to lock it in.
5. When getting choked by someone who has your back, turn your chin into their elbow, then kill the leg that you are backing into.  Push your way out the back.

We pulled out the camcorder at open mat the other day.  I learned something about myself: I grin like a mule eating briars when I'm rolling.  I look like the village idiot, grinning from ear to ear as I'm getting squashed.  Also, we really need to invest in a tripod.  These videos are ridiculously shaky, and asking my kids to be the photographer is risky for the camera and the movie.  Also just ridiculous.

I have given my sneak attack side-control escape as many chances for surprise as it will take.  It's the Jail Break!  Which is hilarious to me because I keep trying to call it the jail bait.  It works perfectly on the 14 year old yellow/white belt who has 50 lbs on me, not so well on the purple belt who has 3 pounds on me.  I was really hoping to get it to work on the purple belt.  Alas, there is no room to sneak my hand in, and I'm not really at the point in my training where I will jam my hand in there until I get what I'm after.  Here's the video:
I just went straight to full guard from here, but I think I need to look into some butterfly guard sweeps.  Anyone have any experience with those?  Tips to offer?

In other news, Rosemary started crawling Saturday at open mat.  Is there a milestone she won't hit on the mats???  My mother used to tell stories about setting a bottle on the other side of the room to give my sister incentive to crawl.  Rosemary was after the focus mitts.  Heh heh heh...

Fenom belt review

Okay, I have to admit, this is just a review based on other people's experiences wearing Fenom's belt.  However, I did have experience with the belt from the other side.  Christy, my instructor/main training partner, recently got a belt from Fenom.  I adore their gis, and was so effusive about it that Christy decided she needed one.  She hasn't gotten the gi yet, but did get the belt. The purple is a beautiful deep amethyst color, but it was so thick that the knot made rolling awkward and uncomfortable.  She was concerned about it, and I have to say that the knot was definitely noticable when it got between us.  Since she had other belts to use, she figured she would pass the Fenom on to someone who could.  The problem is, there aren't any other female purple belts around.  So she decided to promote one of the gym members.
Yes, Rosemary now officially has her very own purple belt!  It's really her very favorite thing to chew on, and a most appropriate teether for a jiu-jitsu baby.  I imagine it's a nice, comforting feeling for her, having had belts at eye level and within her reach at least every other day of her life.

Spring break

So, I just thought I'd mention that I didn't drop off the face of the earth, we're just on spring break.  That's one thing I love about BJJ - it will wait for me.  My training partners might miss me a little bit, but as long as SOMEONE shows up, they'll be okay.  I might be a little rusty when I get back, but I think a week won't be too bad...

See you Monday!
